{"id":282,"date":"2010-09-26T15:55:41","date_gmt":"2010-09-26T20:55:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/d-h-o.us\/home\/?p=282"},"modified":"2023-01-03T08:49:32","modified_gmt":"2023-01-03T13:49:32","slug":"editing-droid-verizon-banner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dho.co\/index.php\/editing-droid-verizon-banner\/","title":{"rendered":"Editing Droid Verizon Banner"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wow it has been a very long time since my last post.&nbsp; Ophthalmology residency&nbsp; has kept me be quite busy.<\/p>\n<p>Anyways to the matter at hand, when people take a peak at my Droid one of the first things that everyone notices and asks me is how I replaced the Verizon Banner on the lock out screen and the drop down menu with my name.&nbsp; It&#8217;s not very difficult, so after repeated badgering, I finally agreed to post it online.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; This works on Motorola Droid.&nbsp; I see no reason it should not work on any other Verizon Android devise, but it is untested.<br \/>\n&#8211;<strong> Sprint users<\/strong>: Follow the same directions, but edit res\\values\\strings.xml and look for &#8216;zz_roamingText1&#8217;<br \/>\n&#8211; <strong>You can do this before flashing a ROM, <\/strong>I do this between <a title=\"Pete's Bugless Beauty\" href=\"http:\/\/www.droidforums.net\/forum\/bugless\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pete&#8217;s Bugless Beauty <\/a>builds<br \/>\n1) You will need root access.&nbsp; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.droid-life.com\/2010\/09\/09\/how-to-root-motorola-droid-running-android-2-2-frg22d\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Here is a link <\/a>to one of the numerous methods of obtaining root.<br \/>\n2) Perform a Nandroid backup (just incase anything goes wrong)<br \/>\n3) Find and copy system\/framework\/framework-res.apk<br \/>\n&#8211; You can use Astro, Root Explorer, or pull from your nandroid backup<br \/>\n4) Associate the .apk extension with WinRar<br \/>\n5) Open the apk and navigate to res\/xml\/eri.xml<br \/>\n&#8211; Remove this file from the apk<br \/>\n6) Open eri.xml with a hex editor<br \/>\n&#8211; I recommend&nbsp; <a title=\"Hex and Disk editor\" href=\"http:\/\/mh-nexus.de\/en\/hxd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HxD (freeware)<\/a><br \/>\n7) Find &#8220;64&#8230;Verizon Wireless&#8230;&#8221;  (Gnex user it appears as &#8230;Verizon Wireless&#8230;64)<br \/>\n&#8211; You can edit &#8216;Verizon Wireless&#8217; to any 16 characters.&nbsp; If you do not need all 16, use spaces.&nbsp; For example &#8216;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; DHO&#8217;&nbsp; (13 spaces 3 characters)<br \/>\n&#8211; I recommend against shortening\/lengthening the string as it will change the size of the file, and may result in unexpected errors.<br \/>\n&#8211; HxD will warn you if you are changing the file size.<br \/>\n8 ) Take your modified eri.xml and place it back into your framework-res.apk&nbsp; res\/xml\/eri.xml<br \/>\n&#8211; No need for re-signing the apk (remember no change in file size)<br \/>\n9) Place on SD card<br \/>\n10) Open your preferred terminal, during this step one or two programs may force close, it&#8217;s okay<br \/>\nsu<br \/>\nsys -rw<br \/>\nbusybox cp \/sdcard\/framework-res.apk \/system\/framework<br \/>\nsys -r0<br \/>\nsync<br \/>\nreboot<br \/>\n11) On reboot you will notice your accounts and wallpaper were lost.&nbsp; I have tried some clever work arounds, but this seems an inevitable consequence of editing the framework.&nbsp; So log back into your google\/facebook\/whatever account, fix your wallpaper, and done.<br \/>\n&#8211; You can use Titanium Backup to restore your system preferences<\/p>\n<p>If anything goes wrong, use Nandroid to restore.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wow it has been a very long time since my last post.&nbsp; Ophthalmology residency&nbsp; has kept me be quite busy.
